Like most who have been reading Return to Labyrinth I was disappointed by the first volume. The second one brought it home for me with it's awesome storytelling, but still lacked in the drawing department. Volume three is starting to bring the story together, and wow is it ever a story. Sarah/Jareth fans rejoice, we got incredibly exciting Sarah/Jareth moments, and a twist that's sure to leave you feeling for Sarah as well as leave your heart aching for Jareth. If you wanted a love story--and come on, who didn't--this volume is going to give it to you. The artwork is still terribly misleading with the cover artist who's incredible, not doing the actual drawings in the book, and the book artist..well, he draws better than me, but no where near the caliber I would have liked to have seen for a book with this much anticipation. All in all, you're not reading this story for the drawings anyway, it's all about the story, and the story is getting down right fantastic! If you like Return to Labyrinth you're going to love this volume, and you should be out there buying it right now, taking it home, reading it, and doing what Sarah would have done, daydream about the dark brooding king and his wayward queen. If you're a fan of the movie Labyrinth and you haven't picked up this series or picked up the first volume, got discouraged and haven't done anything since, it's time to pick it up, because the story is fantastic, and romance, intrigue, and revenge are in the air. Finally, if you didn't even know Return to Labyrinth was even out there, where have you been? Go out and buy this manga..WE GOT ROMANCE PEOPLE! Be warned however, the author's note in the back of the book seems to suggest we've got another long wait for the final volume (this is a 4 volume series). Since we've been waiting a year and a half for this volume, I'm guessing we've got at least another year for volume 4. But listen, go out, read volumes 1-3, rewatch Labyrinth, remember why you loved it so much, and then go to [..] and read some good fanfiction to tide you over. And if you don't know what fanfiction is, you're in for the treat of your life!
For anyone who's been paying attention to this series from the beginning knows that it took the writers and artists just over a year between the first and second mangas. But this one took just under 2 years! With the amount of time they took I thought this one was going to be great, especially after the second one! I was sadly mistaken. Personally I didn't think this one was that good. The artistry really lacked, more than usual, and it was very obvious compared to the second manga. It didn't seem like they really knew how to put this one together. Such a short amount of things happened but took so long to get around to. It also didn't feel believable like the others, meaning it was much harder to really be drawn into the story. The one thing that just kept bugging me what how Jareth was drawn, and while he's not the main character in this series, he still greatly matters. There were times that he actually looked, well, fat! Like he'd randomly been squashed down and got a beer belly, or the cloths looked cheap. It was odd. It saddens me that the third one didn't live up to it's previous mangas and I have a bad feeling it'll be a while til the final one. I would give this one 3 1/2 stars if possible because I certainly have read worse, and this wasn't terrible, just not as good as the others. If the last one looks and feels as bad as this one I fear it may kill a great story.

This is really no work of art. The artwork is nothing special (at all), and the story seems to have been written by a 15-year old. It does not really develop the relationship between Jareth and the girl, the protagonists here are mostly new, and very bidimensional. I bought all three volumes because I really liked the movie. Big mistake. People seem to have liked this volume better, yet it is part of the collection and still not very good, just slightly better than the previous one. Jareth comes back with a little mystery, but if you're looking for a sequel or development of Labyrinth's story and magic, this is not it.
I have read Return to Labyrinth volumes 2-3 but only about half of one. The first volume was just so bad that I couldn't read it anymore. It was as if I were reading an amateur fanfic. The second volume honestly redeemed itself and seemed to improve a lot on the artwork and story. I didn't love it, but i didn't hate it either and I read that one all the way through. I didn't need to finish the first volume to know what was going on and I didn't lose any of the story. Now as for this third volume...it was alright. not as good as the second volume, but it was interesting enough for me to finish it. It is interesting to see that *WARNING SPOILERS* Jareth gets his powers back and I'm curious to know what will happen between him and Sarah. The story was just sort of..ahhhh..annoying. It didn't seem as long as Volume 2. And honestly the entire plot is very predictable I'm pretty sure I already know what's going to happen in Volume 4. The artwork annoys me. I was soooo excited when i found out that the same woman who does Alichino did the cover art for Return to Labyrinth i was thinking she was goign to do all of the artwork. I was like WOW! AWESOME! She is the PERFECT artish for this manga!....I was sadly..and i mean SADLY dissapointed. volume 3 seemed rushed and I was dissapointed with it. I think I'll continue to volume four..but that's in august..i hate waiting.. -_- Anyway, if you're a fan of Labyrinth like I am i would read the mangas just for the pure sake of saying 'yeah I read the mangas' but honestly..I'm sure I can find a better 'fanfic' then this.
I admit I bought all available volumes in one go without even reading the first one. That was a mistake. Going through all the volumes was painful. The plot had to be spoon fed to readers by having a cheap 'sit down and explain everything' scene instead of letting the readers find everything out naturally because it wouldn't make sense and would be too difficult for the writer to be creative in that sense anyway. He's too busy shuffling us from one event to the next that you don't know where you are. The characters are all still face value. I didn't see any reason for growth in Toby. Somehow, I find it hard to think that his training in the goblin economics of money grubbing as character building. The art did not get any better in subsequent volumes either. The expressions on all the characters faces are so vague you'd think they were drugged or sleepy. Either that or they had a stroke and now have a lopsided disproportioned look to them instead. I don't believe for one second that Chris Lie did anything more on the artwork than glance over some interns shoulder and say 'Good `nuf' and get paid. I'm sure that anything between Jareth and Sarah in the 4th volume will be anti climatic at best. The ending is sure to be a disappointment. I'll only get the 4th volume for the cover art.
This series has come along way from volume 1. The plot and characters are now fully developed and I cannot wait to see what's in store for the finale. While I was disappointed in how it started off, this series is now an engaging and worthy sequel to the movie. I just hope we don't have to wait quite as long for vol 4!

My daughter had requested this series for Christmas and she was so happy to receive them. Was what she was wanting - and she seems happy to now own them. (Bought volumes 1 through 4).

This series is a great read for those who loved the movie!!! Super fun and full of twists! Answers all those questions that the movie never did.
Now I have to admit, I read reviews on this book actually the whole set of 4. I've read so many that my personal opinion is - it's fresh, different indeed, yet interesting twist to the story. I've seen the movie dozens of times still enjoy and prefer the original, for there is nothing better than the original. There were so many negative feedback about this and never good. Honestly I really thought this was put together very well and I'm sure there are other ones that will come out in this format, but his is the best it's going to get. Two thumbs up from me!
Return To Labyrinth Movie
Somehow, Forbes has managed to channel David Bowie in his work. This man must have lived and breathed Labyrinth for months on end. As I read his lines, it was like I could hear his voice in my head. Return to Labyrinth is the true successor to the original movie. The magical world is explored and expanded upon much more deeply than I'd have ever thought possible, even going so far as to explain how Jareth was able to control it. The new characters fit perfectly into the universe, their interaction with the original characters equally as flawless in their execution. If you are a fan of the original movie, do yourself a favour and invest in this book!
I wouldn't get much by the way of reviews if I split all of these up, plus there's more to comment on when targeted as a whole series instead of individual books so a combined review it is. I read the first volume of this Labyrinth sequel while I was on vacation and pretty much as soon as I was done, I had to order the rest because I needed to see where these writers took the story and the world and I have to say, as a hardcore Labyrinth fan, I wasn't disappointed. First a comment on the artwork. The covers are gorgeous. I don't think there's much denying that. The artwork within the pages itself, the one that tells the story, isn't as beautiful (I just don't think there was the room and I think it would have rocketed the cost of the book itself) but it really portrayed the world without being too angular anime-looking. The only characters that looked even remotely close to that angular look that kind of freaks me out was Toby, Jareth and that's pretty much it. The rest of the humans had some slight angles but nothing serious and the rest of the creatures, the goblins and faeries and whatnot, looked like they did in the movie which was all sorts of awesome. I liked how the artist didn't stray from that look too far. As far as the story goes, considering the interest Jareth took in Toby and Sarah in the movie, I felt that it was an almost natural progression to go where it ultimately went. I could have lived without the Ice Queen spurned by the Goblin King but what fantasy story would be anything without some good romantic conflict? Actually, it wasn't all that great. It was okay and it served its purpose in the plot but really, I could have lived without it. I think the Queen consigned a little too easily at the end there, relinquishing her hold that she held so steadfastly to for so long. Maybe when she realized that she'll never have him she felt why bother anymore. Hey, at least she realized it. It's more than what a lot of chicks do in that situation. I loved the tie-in between Moppet and Sarah. I don't want to spoil it because I was pretty shocked to find out just what Jareth did (I'll give you a hint, it's along the lines of Spike's Buffy-bot, but not quite) but it suits his persona and the world as a whole. Yeah, as the Goblin King who totally doesn't like getting pwned by a 15 year old girl, I could see him holding a grudge and taking it out on her like he did. I wish Sarah was a stronger character within the series, though. I kind of get why she wasn't up until the end, but the correlation between the why there and her personality originally, they don't match up. She was such a strong character that barely even considered taking the King's offerings in the movie (she barely paused a second when he offered her his balls . . . er . . .). But in the story, she damn near concedes. I found that out of character for her even outside of her character transformation. As I said above, I could have lived without the Queen being there, especially her two daughters, although I liked what they ended up being. And associated to that, how they were their own individuals despite the circumstances (read the books, you'll know what I'm talking about, I'm trying not to spoil). The chubby one was just obnoxious and I was kind of glad when she was taken out of the picture. The emo one, I kind of like the 180 she did but ultimately, I didn't feel her being there all that important to the story as a whole except functioning more as a guide. And there are plenty of other creatures in the Labyrinth that could have done that. I did like how the story branched out beyond the Labyrinth and created other kingdoms but I think it could have been melded together differently. At the end of the day, Toby's story was the one I kept pushing to the side because I wanted to know more about Sarah and Moppet. All of the teasers that centered around them were just too juicy to resist. I mean, it's not that I didn't like Toby's tale, but it's a pretty standard one. A hint of Chosen One Syndrome with a bit of coming of age mixed in. His surroundings were kind of cool but other than that, I wasn't too interested. Let's face it: I wanted more Jareth and Sarah. So I kept reading for that. While I think I would have liked to have seen actual novelizations over manga, I still liked the visuals and I was able to follow along with the story just fine. These books are a definite keeper if you're a Labyrinth fan. And you'd better hurry up. Pretty soon they'll be nothing but a dream (or a costly keepsake) soon enough. No, really. BN doesn't list them at all and Borders only has the last two in the series. So snag them while they're cheap. You'll be kicking yourself if you wait and end up paying $200 a pop like the movie novelization is.
This volume wasn't too bad. The art was still lacking, but I can't say I was expecting it to change anyway. I wish they would have had a bit more of Jareth's plot to get Sarah in this volume because they seem to have a lot of it to cover in the last volume. They also have to carry out the rest of Toby's story in the last volume so I just hope that it isn't going to lack in detail on both because it isn't a very big book I see. I will be very disappointed if the last volume does lack in detail because the 3rd one did leave me wanting more. I could actually picture David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly saying these words as if it were an actual movie. For those of you who are skeptical about reading the books, don't give up too quick because the story does pick up a bit, and that's coming from someone who despised the fact that they made this story into books rather than a movie!
Great spin on things for nostalgia purposes. Not by far the best, but it is a cool way of looking at one possible future for the brats. Liked how they incorporated old characters without ruining them completely. Quick read, some cool art, interesting story. Could have been a bit more dark, but that's just my opinion. Well worth it just to have it in the collection.
True classic sequel to a classic 80s film! A job well done on the author and artist!

Return To Labyrinth Pdf
Every volume gets a little better. I am loving Return to Labyrinth. I never thought I would care about Spittledrum (The goblin mayor) but somehow I do. The writing keeps improving and I am in love with the lyrics to Shadow of a dream (a song that appears in volume 3). Each volume of Return to Labyrinth gets a little bit better. I just wish these would be published faster. Each one takes a year and a half or so to be published which is very disappointing to me. I wish they would come out faster. I have been a fan of Labyrinth for a very long time so I was very excited when they created the manga sequel to the classic fantasy film. The cover art for each issue of the manga is beautiful. It's true that the internal art work isn't as good but it's still a charming story and the story and internal art work improves with each volume. The portrayal of Jareth is accurate to the film. From the part in Volume 1 where Toby says 'You said you wouldn't mess with me anymore!' and Jareth quips 'I said I wouldn't HELP you anymore. There's a difference.' to the way he abruptly leaves his own kingdom (also in volume 1), the song in Volume 3, and how he deals with one treacherous goblin. It's all very true to Jareth. It's true that the story does read a little bit like a fan fiction. Many fan fictions have been named Return to Labyrinth over the years but considering how many fan fictions Labyrinth has spawned a real sequel was bound to feel like a fan fiction of some sort no matter how well it was made. I love the manga just so long as Jareth doesn't turn into anything horrible or die before the series is complete. Things change. I find that most of the negative reviews of Return to Labyrinth are people who just don't want to see things change or evolve from what they loved growing up. I feel the spirit of Labyrinth lives on in this manga. Jareth's nature is exactly as I imagined it to be including the back story revealed so far. It's eerie how true it is to my own childhood imagining about the character's history. As I said, so long as Jareth doesn't turn into something monstrous or die I'm happy with it. I love Jareth. He has always been my favorite character of Labyrinth and now I love him even more in Return to Labyrinth. I enjoyed volume one, volume 2, two and volume 3 of Return to Labyrinth very much and it gets better with every volume. This was probably the best Manga I've read in a long time, not just as a sequel to Labyrinth, but as a manga in general. Each volume gets a little better. Volume 1 is pretty much to give you an idea of what's going on and to introduce you to some familiar and some not-so-familiar characters. It's a fun book and sadly many are not giving it a chance. Volume 2 sets the plot into motion and makes you thirsty for more. And Volume 3 is an exciting and compelling climax to the story. It keeps getting more interesting.
